At Penske, the Level II Technician generally assists with complete overhauls of major components or removes/replaces them according to the direction of the senior technician or maintenance supervisor. We expect our candidates to be able to diagnose and repair, with little or no supervision, the following items: clutches, power take-off systems ("PTO"), electrical systems, hydraulic/pneumatic brake systems, heating and air conditioning systems, dashboard instruments and gauges, as well as preventive vehicle maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities
    • Demonstrate the ability to diagnose and repair the following components, with some supervision: engines (gas and diesel), powertrains including differentials, transmissions, clutch systems, drive shafts, power take-offs ("PTO"), and axle ends, electrical systems including starters and alternators, heating/air conditioning systems, steering columns, electronic components including electronic control modules ("ECM"), electronic control units ("ECU"), sensors, etc., engine components such as turbochargers, engine fan clutches, injectors, cooling systems, etc., brake systems including "ABS" devices, suspension systems (spring and air);
    • Perform mechanical and cosmetic repairs on equipment intended for resale or trade-in and prepare new equipment for delivery;
    • Identify and determine the parts required for repairing disassembled components;
    • Perform all levels of preventive maintenance;
    • Identify warranty-covered repairs and document them on the repair order;
    • Maintain a clean and safe work area;
    • Road test vehicles as needed to diagnose the causes of malfunctions or ensure proper operation;
    • Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, precision instruments, as well as power and pneumatic tools such as impact wrenches, welding equipment, lifting jacks, and electric hoists;
    • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important components to ensure proper operation;
    • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication of equipment and machinery;
    • Adjust and replace brakes, tighten bolts and nuts, and reassemble equipment;
    • Lift or raise trucks & buses, heavy parts, or heavy equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists;
    • Inspect and test defective equipment and listen for operating issues using devices such as laptops, engine analyzers, chassis diagrams, and pressure gauges;
    • Examine and adjust protective devices, loose bolts, and other specific safety devices;
    • Inspect and verify component dimensions and clearances to ensure compliance with manufacturer standards;
    • Specialize in the repair, detection, and resolution of issues involving major components such as engines, transmissions, and differentials, including complete equipment replacement, turbochargers, fuel systems, etc.;
    • Perform other tasks and projects assigned by the supervisor.


Qualifications
Requirements
    • 2 or more years of hands-on experience maintaining highway tractors and semi-trailers;
    • Training in heavy vehicle mechanics or any other relevant training;
    • Preference given to specialized training in vehicle repair and component replacement;
    • Ability to use all shop tools;
    • Candidates with a background in automotive mechanics will also be considered;
    • Valid Class 5 driver's license required, Class 3 preferred. However, must be able to obtain a Class 3 license within 6 months of employment;
    • Basic computer skills preferred for entering data into computerized maintenance systems;
    • Ability to work in an environment where temperature is not controlled;
    • Regular, predictable, and full attendance is an essential function of the job;
    • Candidate must be willing to travel within the district (customer yards, immediate geographic area, and training locations), work according to the required schedule and location, complete the Penske employment application form, and undergo a reference check (including previous employment and academic background).

    • This position requires the ability to see near and far, have good peripheral vision, perceive depth, and adjust focus.
    • While performing the duties related to this position, the associate must regularly stand, walk, and sit, as well as speak and listen. They must also frequently use their hands and arms to touch, handle, manipulate, and reach.
