Position Details

Forestry, Agriculture and Lands - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador 

This position provides skilled journeyperson level work on a diversified range of agriculture equipment. This position is responsible for setting up, maintaining, servicing, diagnosing, repairing and reconditioning agricultural equipment. This equipment includes tractors and combines, as well as a variety of implements for agricultural functions such as tillage, seeding, planting, harvesting, haying, spraying and application. The incumbent may also work on other equipment such as side by side, electric fences, irrigation and precision farming equipment. All work must be adhered to manufacturer's specifications. While preventive maintenance is the main component of this position, repairing out of service equipment in the shop or in the field (research fields or clients (farmers) fields) may be required. This position must be able to service and repair spark ignition and compression ignition engines, drive train systems and components, hydraulic, hydrostatic and pneumatic systems, electrical and electronic systems, steering and braking systems, structural components, operator stations and other related support systems. They may also be required to assemble and adjust new agricultural equipment, conduct regular inspections, perform scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrication and tune-ups, take defective units apart, and repair or replace broken, worn out or faulty parts. The incumbent will develop safe operating procedures (SOP) and review with other staff in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices pertaining to workplace and equipment. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining shop and parts inventory for the equipment maintenance shop. Performs other related duties as required.

Screening Criteria
 

  1. Certification as a Red Seal Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician, certification as a Red Seal Journeyperson Truck and Transport Mechanic, or Red Seal Journeyperson Automotive Technician with experience with heavy equipment
  2. Experience maintaining, calibrating, servicing, diagnosing, repairing and reconditioning various types of equipment
  3. Experience maintaining farm equipment and other related equipment
  4. Experience in electric welding and operation of oxyacetylene cutting (Asset)

  1. Valid Newfoundland Class 5 Drivers License
  2. Recent driver Abstract Satisfactory to the employer
  3. Red Seal Journeyperson certification in required discipline



Conditions of Acceptance
 

  1. The demands of the job occasionally result in considerable fatigue, requiring periods of rest. Examples of the kinds of physical demands include crawling under vehicles, climbing on ladders, bending, stretching, twisting while working in tight spaces, standing or kneeling on cement floors, lifting and/or moving heavy objects
  2. Regularly required to lift or move objects 25 to 50 lbs and lifting or moving objects over 50 lbs is required on a regular basis
