Payband: I;Starting Rate: $39.34; Four Year Rate: $45.59
Department: Faculty of Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship 
Hours: 40 hours per week (1) one hour lunch; Mon - Fri (7:30am - 4:30pm) 
Reporting To: Manager, Academic Operations
Campus Location: Whitby

Duties and Responsibilities:The incumbent willensure that the power tools and stationary equipment in the Automotive Shop andElectric Vehicle Lab at the Whitby Campus are in proper and safe workingcondition by means of preventative maintenance schedules, troubleshooting andrepairs. 

The incumbent willbe responsible for the planning and construction of complex specializedtechnical teaching aids including coordination of purchase, testing,certification and maintenance. They will assist faculty through direct contactwith students by providing hands-on demonstrations and tutoring or academicassistance, as well as provide technical expertise and/or advice to students. Theincumbent will provide demonstrations in the shop environment on "non-academic"subject matter with high degree of independent judgement and technicalexpertise.

In addition, theywill work with staff to facilitate materials and development of projects forall trade programs and forecast required resources for program delivery. They maybe requested to demonstrate practical assignments due to larger class size andneed for safety, but will not be required to evaluate student, but onlysupervise shop operation. 
 

  • Develop, maintain policies and procedures for faculty use of lab and shop facilities while assisting faculty through demonstrations and tutoring or academic assistance of lab procedures and tasks.
  • Plan and establish maintenance schedules, perform preventative maintenance and unit repairs to ensure effective utilization of resources based on college needs.
  • Maintain equipment records and follow through in repair of a variety of shop equipment (basic and complex). Facilitate third-party maintenance and repair of specialized equipment requiring certified standards of operation.
  • Coordinate, plan and establish inventory schedules and records. Evaluate and perform inventory duties, pricing quotes, ordering and purchasing of materials and equipment ensuring quality and efficiency of budget. Receiving incoming supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinate, plan, construct, certify and maintain all teaching aids for program faculty.
  • Plan and organize shipping and receiving of program supplies and materials.
  • Provide technical support for faculty, administration and support staff for automotive instructional supplies and equipment.
  • Comply with shop/lab policies and procedures using a high level of judgement to meet DC policies and procedures.
  • Provide back-up and support for other disciplines and technologists, including receiving incoming supplies and equipment, and the maintenance of shops.


Qualifications:
 

  • Licensed Automotive Technician (310S) RSE (Red Seal Endorsement) and Certificate of Apprenticeship (CofA).
  • Minimum five years' experience in the trade, including equipment maintenance.
  • Must be self-directed with strong organizational and time management skills in planning, executing and completing tasks.
  • Ability to be clear and concise with verbal and written communication skills; ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in general computing skills.
  • Inventory Control/Purchasing Procedure awareness an asset.
  • Forklift operator certification an asset, it is an expectation of the role within three months
  • Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) an asset, it is an expectation of the role within three months.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) an asset, it is an expectation of the role within three months.
  • Familiarity with audio system and vehicle monitoring through satellite communications, new styles of automated braking systems [collision monitoring braking systems (CMB), adaptive cruise control], lane changing and parking assistance (blind spot detection, backup cameras), dual clutch transmission (DCT), complex communication networks and gasoline direct injection (GDI).
  • Knowledge of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles maintenance and safety an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry safety standards such as WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Fall Arrest.
