About Us

A career at Hitachi Rail will help create a legacy. With operations in every corner of the world, our work goes to the cutting-edge of digital transformation and technology. From the multi-cultural strength of our global organisation to the sustainable and innovative ways we work to bring people together, there's something for everyone to get stuck into. And that's where you come in.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)

As a RAM Specialist, you will be working under the supervision of a senior/technical specialist and/or RAM Engineering Manager in performing RAM activities and collaborating with other design team members to ensure that RAM is built into the system design while meeting all contractual requirements. This role provides an excellent learning environment, as the RAM Specialist will report directly to senior/technical specialists and will receive mentorship and training in the practical application of RAM Engineering in CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) systems.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Analyze and evaluate hardware designs to verify compliance with contractual Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) requirements.
  • Evaluate and identify potential RAM challenges and suggest design alternatives such as redundancy, reliable components, preventive and corrective maintenance, and diagnostic capabilities to enhance subsystem or system RAM.
  • Prepare Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) Program Plans, defining objectives, tasks, and deliverables at various project phases.
  • Perform Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and/or Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) at subsystem and system levels to identify single failure points critical to operational success.
  • Perform Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability apportionments to ensure hardware design meets contractual requirements.
  • Conduct spare analysis and recommend spare parts for supporting system maintenance during the warranty period.
  • Provide RAM-calculated data to support Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analyses predicting total cost over the CBTC system's life span.
  • Perform MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) calculations based on field returns to support Quality Assurance processes such as the Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) and participate in FRB (Failure Review Board) meetings.
  • Evaluate the Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability of design changes and Engineering Change Control for hardware by reviewing technical specifications.

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic components and circuits.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in system architecture for complex systems, with exposure to RAMS concepts and analysis techniques.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and oral).
  • Computer skills: MS Office, DOORS, ClearQuest, and SAP (preferred).
  • Knowledge of railway systems (asset).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • (Optional) Membership in the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE).
