Job Title Heavy Equipment Technician

Wage$33.39 - $36.12 (2025)

Reports to Fleet Supervisor

Department Public Works

Location Fleet Services. Work location may vary; travel throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes will be required.

Hours Normal working hours are 40 hours per week with core working hours between 6:30am and 3:00pm or 7:00am and 3:30pm

Other Combination of general shop environment and off site travel. May be required to work varied and additional hours: day, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours

Essential Duties 
 

  • Assist in scheduling and prioritizing equipment maintenance and repairs, estimating timelines, coordinating priorities, ensuring inventory availability, and following up as required; record work activities using work order tracking system software
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system faults using computerized and manual testing equipment; perform repairs to restore proper function and ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications
  • Follow and maintain preventative maintenance schedules; assist the supervisor in planning and coordinating proactive maintenance and workflows to minimize equipment downtime
  • Operate various City-owned equipment to conduct tests, diagnose issues, and verify repairs
  • Inspect, service, and maintain engines, transmissions, differentials, fuel systems, brake systems, and electrical circuits, including troubleshooting
  • Operate grinders, power saws, drill presses, testers, emission analyzers, welding and cutting equipment, and other specialized mechanical shop tools
  • Communicate with divisional supervisors and other stakeholders to coordinate repair schedules, provide updates, and support departmental service objectives
  • Ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, corporate policies, and environmental regulations regarding toxic waste hazardous materials
  • Utilize welding and fabrication skills as required for repairs and maintenance


Qualifications 
 

  • Secondary school diploma
  • 421A Technician's License
  • Minimum five (5) years of related progressive experience, preferably in a municipal environment, including leadership experience in a unionized environment
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's Licence with "Z" endorsement and an acceptable driving record
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diesel combustion engines, Tier 4 emissions systems, and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to research and implement innovate and cost-effective operational procedures
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Possess and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and personal attributes as described in the key performance competencies outlined below
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications, the internet, and any other related software
  • Upon a conditional offer of employment, a Criminal Record Check will be required


Working Conditions 
 

  • Normal working hours are 40 hours per week with core working hours between 6:30am and 3:00pm or 7:00am and 3:30pm
  • May be required to work varied and additional hours: day, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours
  • Travel throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes in accordance with job requirements
  • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24/7 rotational on-call shift, carrying an on-call cellphone
  • Ability to exert up to 22.2 kg (50 lbs) of force occasionally, up to 8.9 kg (20 lbs) frequently, and up to 4.4 kg (10 lbs) constantly to move objects
  • Work in all weather conditions, including prolonged periods of heat, rain or snow, while respecting safe work practices
