Welder

We are seeking two skilled, positive, forward thinking and safety-conscious Welder I to join our Fleet and Facility Services team. In this role, you will perform high-quality welding, brazing, soldering, and cutting tasks on a wide variety of municipal equipment, vehicles, and city infrastructure. Working from sketches, CAD drawings, blueprints, or verbal instructions, you will bring structural projects to life and ensure our city's fleet and facilities remain safe and operational.

As this is a safety-sensitive role, you will be expected to work independently with minimal supervision, adhering strictly to safety regulations while occasionally guiding welder apprentices.

What will you do?

 

• Manufacture, modify, repair, and assemble various heavy components (e.g., sanders, hoppers, dump boxes, front ploughs, utility bodies, and trailers). Perform welding and cutting utilizing SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, Plasma-arc, and oxy-acetylene torch processes across various metals (steel, aluminum, stainless steel, brass, bronze)
• Perform general welding repairs and modifications on seasonal equipment (snowblower chutes, drums, street sweepers, vehicle cranes, and aerial lifts) and city infrastructure components brought into the shop
• Fabricate, install, and repair infrastructure at various off-site locations across the City of Edmonton (fencing, gates, handrails, bridge decks)
• Fabricate and rebuild specialized parts such as hydraulic cylinders, centre pivot pins, speed plough wheels, and skid shoes. Ensure accurate data entry into the work order management system

Qualifications:

 

• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Certified Alberta Journeyman Welder (or recognized provincial equivalent)
• Licence: Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence (Class 3 is considered a strong asset) with a satisfactory current Driver's Abstract
• Minimum of five (5) years of practical work experience as a Journeyman Welder
• Proven experience in the repair, maintenance, and fabrication of heavy equipment and vehicles is highly desirable

Skills required for success:

 

• Advanced practical knowledge of S.M.A.W. (Stick), G.M.A.W. (MIG), G.T.A.W. (TIG), Plasma-arc, and oxy-fuel processes
• Strong spatial perception to visualize and fabricate parts from plans, sketches, specifications, and CAD/ Solid works drawings
• Excellent color acuity to identify color-coded metals, welding rods, and ferrous metals via spark and flame tests
• Robust understanding of metallurgy, combustion gases, basic electricity, and the thermal expansion/shrinkage properties of metals
• Familiarity with the work and coordination of related municipal trades

Conditions of Employment:

 

• Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
• Compliance with safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is required
• Ability to perform physical demands and pass a job-related physical abilities evaluation

Work Environment:

 

• This role is physically demanding and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, precipitation (rain, snow), dust, noise, vibrations, confined spaces, and heights. Work is performed both indoors in a shop environment and outdoors at off-site locations

Salary Range: $48.242 (Hourly); $100,729.300 (Annually)
