Notice of Part-Time Academic Vacancy
We are looking for amazing! If you are dynamic and would like the opportunity to help us to be recognized as the best student-centered College in the country, then you will find it here. As a member of our team, you will help students find their passions and help them achieve their amazing. If this is you, then join us at the hub of the Great Lakes, in the traditional territory of the Anishnaabek people.

Sault College is seeking experienced trades professionals to teach within our Motive Power diploma program.
This two-year program provides students with a strong foundation across, automotive, heavy equipment, and truck and coach systems, preparing them to enter the motive power industry, with both technical knowledge and hands-on experience.
We are building a talent pool of part-time faculty who can help students develop the skills, confidence, and system-level understanding needed to succeed in the trade.
If you've built a career working in industry and are looking for a way to give back; if you enjoy assisting the learning of those around you and find yourself gravitating towards supporting junior members of your trade in the workplace, this is the opportunity for you.

What You'll Teach

Part-Time instructors may teach courses across the program, including:

  • Shop practices, safety procedures, tools, and precision measurement
  • Internal combustion engines, cooling systems, and component inspection
  • Basic electricity, electrical systems, and diagnostic testing
  • Automotive and heavy-duty maintenance practices and service procedures
  • Suspension, steering, braking, and alignment systems
  • Fuel systems, combustion principles, and emissions systems
  • Drive train systems, including clutches, transmissions, and differentials
  • Hydraulic and fluid power systems used in heavy equipment
  • Use of service information systems, documentation, and work orders

Courses combine classroom instruction with hands-on shop learning and practical application. Students are building foundational skills, so instruction focuses on both technical understanding and applied practice.

What We're looking For

We are seeking skilled trades professionals who:

  • Hold a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification in a related trade (e.g., Automotive Service Technician 310S, Heavy Equipment Technician 421A, Truck and Coach Technician 310T), or have significant, relevant industry experience
  • Have strong working knowledge of motive power systems across one or more platforms (automotive, heavy equipment, truck and coach)
  • Can explain how systems work - not just how to repair them
  • Are interested in supporting students who are early in their development
  • Value safety, professionalism, and high standards in the shop

Previous teaching or training experience is an asset, but not required.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver engaging lessons that connect theory to real-world shop and field experience
  • Demonstrate tools, equipment, and diagnostic procedures
  • Guide students through hands-on shop activities and foundational skill development
  • Evaluate student progress through practical and theoretical assessments
  • Support students as they build confidence, competence, and readiness for the workplace

Why Teach in the Diploma Program

This program plays a key role in preparing students to enter the motive power industry or to pursue apprenticeship pathways.

As an instructor, you'll help students:

  • Build a strong foundation across multiple vehicle and equipment systems
  • Develop safe, professional work habits
  • Gain the confidence to enter the trade and continue learning on the job

Teaching Part-time is also an opportunity to:

  • Share your experience with the next generation
  • Stay connected to evolving technologies in the field
  • Contribute to the development of skilled trades professionals in Northern Ontario

Application instructions:

  • Resume outlining relevant experience
  • Trade certifications and/or academic experience
  • Brief statement of interest in teaching

This is a part-time instructor position, $61.01/hour - $115.13/hour.
