Job Profile

Under the supervision of a Vehicle Systems Supervisor, the Truck and Transport Mechanic Apprentice will be assisting in all diagnosis, overhaul and maintenance aspects of Winnipeg Transit fleet vehicles, support vehicles and equipment. 

As the Truck and Transport Mechanic Apprentice you will: 
 

  • Assist in the diagnosis and repair of the following: the City of Winnipeg bus fleet, diesel and/or other internal combustion engines, transmissions and/or hydraulic equipment, and all related electrical and auxiliary equipment
  • Develop a working knowledge of the technical and administrative procedures necessary to perform the duties of a Journeyman Truck and Transport Mechanic.


Your education and qualifications include: 
 

  1. Minimum of Level 1 Truck and Transport Apprentice or Red River College Certificate Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic
  2. Minimum of Level 1: Heavy Duty, Automotive or Agricultural Equipment Technician/Mechanic may be considered.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  4. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  5. Acceptable safety and job performance relevant to this position.
  6. Ability to use sound judgement in making decisions.
  7. Effective interpersonal skills.
  8. Adherence to the City of Winnipeg Respectful Workplace Standards.


Conditions of employment: 
 

  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence and be able to obtain a Manitoba Class 2 Driver's Licence with Air Brake Endorsement, within six months of employment (in-house training).
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficient mechanical aptitude through a test
  • Successful candidate(s) must have a complete set of mechanic's hand tools on their first day of employment.
  • Must successfully complete required training in the use of specialized equipment, such as scissors lifts, forklifts, etc. within a specified time frame.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the routine manual labour components of the position, which may include but are not limited to: heavy lifting (up to 100lbs), maneuvering within or around large equipment, exposure to dust, noise, extreme weather conditions, diesel exhaust fumes and chemical agents used in the mechanical field.
