Position Details
Based on location, positions available may be full time permanent, full time temporary or seasonal from October 2026 to April 2027, with the possibility of extension. Individuals will be scheduled for 40 hours per week (5 x 8-hour shifts for Winter Season, with overtime available and 4 x 10-hour shift for summer schedule)

About Us
The Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management and maintenance of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers and construction and management of provincial government buildings.
About the Opportunities
The HET's skilled journeyperson level work responsibilities on the Government owned heavy-duty fleet includes:
- diagnosing problems related to light and heavy equipment as well as advanced work in a variety of other trades associated with the repair of vehicles and related equipment such as trucks, loaders, snowplows, snow blowers, graders and air powered equipment carried out in the Regions;
- repairing, rebuilding and fabricating parts and components of light and heavy vehicles, vehicle systems and related equipment;
- emergency road services and makes field repairs;
- conducting regular inspections and executing preventative maintenance schedules;
- performing duties in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices pertaining to workplace and equipment;
- overseeing apprenticeship technicians;
- performing other related duties as required.
Screening Criteria
About You
As a HET, you possess a certification as a Red Seal Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician or certification as a Red Seal Journeyperson Truck and Transport Mechanic. If you have a Red Seal Journeyperson Automotive Technician with experience with heavy equipment and heavy trucks, we want to talk with you! Experience in diagnostics and repair of light and heavy equipment is required and experience in electric welding and acetylene cutting for minor repairs would be a bonus.
Assessment Criteria
You bring a solid knowledge of diagnostics and repair of heavy equipment and heavy trucks, and you are well informed regarding Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices within this trade
Your ability to make sound, independent decisions, sometimes in dynamic circumstances will support your efforts to ensure efficient and effective delivery of a safe, mechanical fleet. As a HET, you will perform your duties in a professional manner as you interact with various trades, operators, and supervisors. As a Red Seal journeyperson, you may be required to mentor apprentices assigned to you and through effectively exchanging information, you will pass along your knowledge and experience to lead others in this front-line, service position.

- Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license.
- Recent and satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
- Red Seal Journeyperson certification in required discipline.
Conditions of Acceptance
- The demands of the job occasionally result in considerable fatigue, requiring periods of rest. Examples of the kinds of physical demands include crawling under vehicles, climbing on ladders, bending, stretching, twisting while working in tight spaces, standing or kneeling on cement floors, lifting and/or moving heavy objects such as tires, rims, brake drums, etc.
- Regularly required to lift or move objects 25 to 50 lbs and lifting or moving objects over 50 lbs is required on a regular basis.
