Job Profile

Under the supervision of the Director of Emergency Mechanical Services, the Emergency Services Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of fire apparatus and related emergency vehicles. This role plays a key part in ensuring operational readiness, safety, and compliance with regulatory and manufacturer standards. The role also supports training of mechanics and contributes to developing repair procedures and diagnostic protocols. 

This position will report to the Supervisor of EMSB for daily duties, time away, etc. 

As the EMSB Mechanic you will: 
 

  • Do Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
  • Assist with Training & Mentorship
  • Be responsible for inventory & parts management
  • Assist with support services


Your education and qualifications include: 
 

  1. Valid Journeyperson and Red Seal (Interprovincial) Certification as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic/Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic.
  2. Valid Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certificate or must be obtained within one (1) year.
  3. Valid Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association (MOPIA) Certification as an Air Conditioning Mechanic.
  4. Minimum five (5) years' experience as a Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic (on-highway).
  5. Minimum five (5) years' experience with engine, transmission, ABS brakes, conventional and multiplexed electrical systems, diagnostics, as well as using diagnostic tools and laptops.
  6. Minimum three (3) years' experience of mechanical experience. Heavy-duty or emergency vehicles experience is an asset.
  7. One (1) years' experience in gas and electric welding. Experience utilizing mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum (TIG), plastic and brass is an asset.
  8. Experience with after-treatment for emissions systems on highway trucks is an asset.
  9. Experience working with Cummins engines is an asset.
  10. Working knowledge of industry standards, codes, legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, etc. pertaining to heavy fleet apparatus and emergency equipment, such as those mandated or recommended by the National Standards of Canada No. CAN/ULC - S515 - M88, CMVSA (Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act), TDGA (Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act) and MHTA (Manitoba Highway Traffic Act).
  11. Knowledge of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Standard 1901, 1911, 1914, 1915, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International is an asset.
  12. Working knowledge of Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Act, Manitoba's WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
  13. Knowledge of vehicle systems, electrical multiplexing and HVAC diagnostics is an asset.
  14. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task in a deadline driven environment with time constraints.
  15. Ability to effectively diagnose, explain and resolve all maintenance and repair issues related to heavy fleet apparatus and emergency equipment.
  16. Ability to verbally communicate effectively.
  17. Ability to effectively communicate in writing, including but not limited to, creating clear, accurate and detailed reports that include technical information.
  18. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, other agencies and professionals and the public.
  19. Ability to utilize electronic diagnostic tools and maintenance management systems.
  20. Ability to use Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook and Excel is an asset.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 3 Full Driver's License with Airbrake Endorsement (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer. Documentation must not have any alcohol-related charges and/or convictions. Provincial equivalents will be accepted, however, out of province applicants must show proof of having transferred their license to Manitoba prior to their first day of recruit training. Any infractions, offences or investigations occurring prior or after application submission must be reported to the WFPS. OR Class 5 Full Driver's License. Must obtain Class 3 Full Driver's License with Airbrake Endorsement within six (6) months.
  • Valid Driver Safety Rating Scale Statement (original copy) from Manitoba Public Insurance (or provincial equivalent), satisfactory to the employer which must be dated no more than thirty (30) days prior to the start date of employment. Documentation must be no more than minus four (-4) on the Driver Safety Rating scale. This document will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.   • Most possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Ozone Protection Industry Association (MOPIA) Certification as an Air Conditioning Mechanic.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo and pass a medical examination administered by the City of Winnipeg Occupational Health Branch.
  • The successful candidate must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position - including considerable standing, bending, crawling, working in confined spaces, lifting, climbing, pulling and reaching, and heavy lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended or varied hours to perform repairs on WFPS apparatus and equipment at any time on a call out basis; this can be an emergency incident and under adverse or inclement weather conditions, a required.
  • 12. Willingness and ability to work from various locations within the City of Winnipeg based on work requirements or breakdowns of apparatus.
