The Position:
As the leader of one of our Telematics Group's teams within the Telematics, Automation, and Controls Division, you'll play a pivotal role in defining the development roadmap and vehicle communication technology across MacLean Engineering's 32+ vehicle types. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you'll drive progress in remote operation, asset data monitoring, vehicle standardization, and embedded development- while mentoring and empowering your team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

This team is building on MacLean's strong foundational digital controls to enable visualization, monitoring, and control of our vehicles from further afar. The successful candidate will operate at the cutting edge of a rapidly evolving technology sector, developing innovative solutions for real-world mining challenges with a focus on safety-critical resilient interfaces, real-time communications, and modular scalable service-oriented architectures.

Responsibilities and Duties

Technical Leadership and Mentorship
 

  • Lead a team of engineers in the design and deployment ofvehicle connectivity solutions acrosson vehiclenetworks(CAN- J1939/CANOpen-and Ethernet),embedded systems(Simulink, C++),off-vehiclecommunications forremoteoperation and monitoring, andvehicle interface management throughmessage structures (Protobuf) and information models (OPC UA).
  • Provide hands-onmentorshipdemonstratingengineering excellenceacross multipletechnology stacks and varying architectures.
  • Partner cross-functionally with electrical, controls,data, platform,autonomy,and GUIteams to deliver scalable, securecontainerizedmicroservice integrationson edge devices spanningeast-west and north-south communications.


Technical Development
 

  • Design and implement vehicle interface software directly - developing CODESYS logic, C++/Go services, and MATLAB/Simulink models to handle J1939 CAN messaging, Ethernet/UDP transport, MQTT telemetry, and real-time command/diagnostics flows.
  • Build and deploy containerized edge services (Docker) that bridge embedded controllers to cloud systems via MQTT and Azure IoT Edge, definingProtobufschemas, OPC UA models, and configuration management to ensure deterministic data exchange and backward compatibility.
  • Execute end-to-end validation and release: perform CAN trace analysis, bench and HIL/SIL testing, debugnetworkand timing issues, andmaintainGit-based CI/CD pipelines to automate builds, tests, and production deployments.


Documentation and Compliance
 

  • Own interface control documentation (ICDs), message definitions, electrical diagrams, configuration/version management, and traceability acrosstechnical vehicle documentation.
  • Ensure compliance withindustry best practices andinternal/internationalstandards, cybersecurity practices, and robust release governance across Git-based source control and automated CI/CD pipelines.


First Year Goals:

People: Foster teamwork and create team identity by establishing the new team, a collection of SMEs in related domains, as a cohesive unit, aligned on shared goals. Leverage knowledge sharing across overlapping functions in differing domains as well as collaboration in shared domains to mature the team and its interdepartmental impact.

Products:
 

  • Develop a deep understanding of MacLean Engineering's underground and surface mining product lines and theirtechnologyroadmap, including current capabilities and future opportunities for vehicleinterface development.
  • Advance the design and implementation of next-generation vehiclehardware/softwaresystems fora unified data highway servingall vehicle product linesacross manual operation monitoring, line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight remote operations, andautonomoususe cases.
  • Lead the maturation of an existing vehicleinterface stackfromearlyprototype to market-ready release, ensuring robustness, safety, and scalability across EV and diesel carriers and MacLean Operating System and legacy vehicle platforms.


Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:
 

  • Minimum7years of experience with the job responsibilities and duties described above.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English;proficiencyin other languages, primarily Spanish and French,is anasset.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related fieldis an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification.
  • Mobile vehicle telemetry and Mining experience are an asset
