Salary: $19.33 per hour (CG-29 70%) for an Apprentice is paid in accordance with the Maintenance and Operational Services (MOS) Collective Agreement, calculated as a percentage of the Journeyperson rate. 40 hours per week

Position Details
Transportation and Infrastructure - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
Through an Apprenticeship Training Program, the Department is endeavouring to provide apprentices with the opportunity for progression through the various levels of the apprenticeship program leading to Journeyperson Certification. This will be accomplished by providing the relevant work experience and mentoring. The Apprentice will provide assistance to the Journey Person Heavy Equipment Technician in the diagnosing and repair of problems related to light and heavy equipment carried out in the region. Equipment includes trucks, loaders, snow plows, snow blowers, graders and air powered equipment. Work involves repairing, rebuilding and fabricating parts and components of light and heavy vehicles, its systems and related equipment. Performs duties in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices pertaining to workplace and equipment. This work will facilitate learning in the operations of a mechanical facility and provide opportunities to apply necessary skills.
Screening Criteria
- Completed Heavy Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport First Block Level Training at a recognized post-secondary institution, and possess the necessary hours for the apprentice level as per the conditions governing apprentice training established by the Division of Institutional and Industrial Training
- Confirmation of completion of Heavy Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport First Block Level Training at a recognized post-secondary institution (transcript)
- Experience in diagnostics and repair (asset)
Assessment Criteria
- Knowledge of diagnostics of heavy equipment and heavy trucks
- Knowledge of repair of heavy equipment and heavy trucks
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices
- Electric welding and acetylene cutting (asset)
- Ability to solve problems
- Ability to manage time and tasks
- Ability to work in a team

- Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license
- Current driver's abstract acceptable to the Employer
Conditions of Acceptance
- The demands of the job occasionally result in considerable fatigue, requiring periods of rest. Examples of the kinds of physical demands include crawling under vehicles, climbing on ladders, bending, stretching, twisting while working in tight spaces, standing or kneeling on cement floors, lifting and/or moving heavy objects such as tires, rims, brake drums, etc.
- Regularly required to lift or move objects 25 to 50 lbs and lifting or moving objects over 50 lbs is required on a regular basis
