Position Summary:
The Tow motorMechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all mobile material handling equipment, including forklifts, tow motors, pallet jacks, and related mechanical systems.
This role ensures that all mobile equipment is maintained in a safe, reliable, and compliant condition to support continuous operational performance across the mill and warehouse facilities.
Reports To:General Mill & Mobile Equipment Supervisor
Shift Hours: Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 3:00pm.
Key Responsibilities:
Mobile Equipment Maintenance:
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems on tow motors, forklifts, and other mobile equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance, servicing, and safety checks in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and company standards.
- Troubleshoot and correct faults in engines, transmissions, braking systems, lift mechanisms, and steering components.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure all equipment repairs and maintenance activities comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) standards and internal safety policies.
- Perform regular inspections and safety audits of assigned equipment.
- Maintain accurate service records and documentation for compliance tracking.
Support Operations:
- Respond to urgent breakdowns and prioritize repairs to minimize downtime.
- Assist in planning major repairs and overhauls during scheduled shutdowns.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and operators regarding equipment status and service needs.
Continuous Improvement:
- Recommend improvements to preventive maintenance programs based on recurring issues or inspections.
- Support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives and participate in equipment reliability efforts.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Secondary school diploma required; additional technical certifications or mobile equipment mechanical training preferred.
Licensing/Certification:
- Certification as a Powered Lift Truck Technician (Ontario 282E) preferred, or
- Trade certification in Automotive Service Technician (310S), Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (421A), or Truck and Coach Technician (310T) will be considered an asset.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience maintaining Tow motor, forklifts, or related material handling equipment in an industrial environment.
Skills:
- Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and work orders.
- Effective communication, organizational, and time management skills.
- Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Work performed in mill, warehouse, and outdoor environments with exposure to dust, noise, and temperature variations.
- Must be able to lift and move heavy components (up to 50 lbs.) and work in awkward or confined spaces.
- Occasional work during scheduled shutdowns or outside normal hours may be required.
