Job description

This Mobile Diesel Technician / Mechanic position at Penske is focused on providing first-class service to customers requiring roadside assistance, as well as completing inspections required by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). This position involves diagnosing and repairing all types of truck maintenance issues in all weather conditions, as safely as possible at roadside locations, as well as performing on-site inspections at our facilities.

Qualified candidates must have proven experience repairing tractor-trailers, have completed PEP certification or be eligible to obtain certification within 6 months of being hired, and be proficient in the use of various repair tools. Selected candidates must be willing to drive a Penske roadside assistance vehicle equipped with tools and supplies.

Main responsibilities:

- Respond promptly to roadside assistance calls and repair units by identifying and determining which parts require replacement and which repairs are covered under warranty, while properly documenting all work;
- Perform diagnostics and repairs unrelated to roadside assistance calls that can be completed quickly, as required;
- Restock the roadside assistance vehicle with the tools, parts, tires and other materials required to provide effective roadside assistance;
- Perform maintenance or repairs on the roadside assistance vehicle as required;
- Perform SAAQ inspections;
- When not responding to roadside calls, assist with shop repairs as directed by the Supervisor;
- Perform any other projects or duties assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications:

- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in tractor-trailer maintenance required;
- Must currently be enrolled in an apprenticeship program;
- Must maintain membership or registration with the appropriate government agencies;
- Candidates with a DEP in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics or experience in heavy-duty vehicle mechanics will be considered;
- Specialized training in the repair and replacement of vehicle components is an asset;
- Proficiency in the use of shop tools is required;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence required;
- Basic computer skills are preferred for entering data into maintenance systems;
- Ability to work in environments without climate control is required;
- Regular, predictable and full attendance is an essential function of the position;
- Must be available to travel within the district as required (customer locations, surrounding geographic area and training sites), work the required schedule and at the specified location, complete a Penske employment application and undergo a reference check.

This position is regulated by the Department of Transportation or designated by the company as safety-sensitive. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is required. Employees must be able to take responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety of others.

- The employee will be required to move frequently, including standing, walking, climbing, bending and sitting for extended periods during the shift;
- Daily use of hands is required to grasp, reach, touch, handle and operate necessary tools and controls;
- The employee must be able to work at heights using appropriate ladders or elevated work platforms;
- The employee must be able to work in all weather conditions;
- Due to the frequent movement of large trucks in the workplace, the employee must have adequate vision and hearing to move around safely;
- The employee must be able to regularly lift or move up to 50 lb (23 kg) and occasionally up to 100 lb (45 kg).
