Position Details

Transportation and Infrastructure - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador 

The Automotive Technician position is essential to maintaining the equipment fleet for summer and winter operations, enabling maintenance operators to keep provincial highways safe for the travelling public. The Technician performs skilled journeyperson level mechanical work to maintain and repair light duty, heavy duty, and related equipment. Duties include servicing, diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, or replacing assemblies, systems, and components; fabricating parts and components; and welding as required. The Technician also recommends appropriate repair actions and ensures vehicle mechanical safety through preventative maintenance and inspections that assess workmanship and compliance with industry regulations and standards. All work is completed in accordance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices. Occasional emergency road services and field repairs may occur. Other related duties as assigned.

Screening Criteria
 

1. Certification as a Red Seal Journeyperson Automotive Technician. Other related Red Seal Journeyperson Technician certificates will be considered.
2. Experience with diagnostics, repair and maintenance light vehicles and equipment.
3. Experience with inspections on light vehicles and equipment.

Assessment Criteria
 

1. Knowledge of diagnostics of light vehicles and equipment.
2. Knowledge of repair and maintenance of light vehicles and equipment.
3. Knowledge of inspection procedures and processes.
4. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices.
5. Ability to make independent decisions and solve problems.
6. Ability to assess and evaluate multiple issues and balance competing demands in a dynamic environment.
7. Teamwork.

Conditions of Offer
 

1. Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license.
2. Current Driver's Abstract suitable to the Employer.
3. Red Seal Journeyperson certification in required discipline.

Conditions of Acceptance
 

1. The demands of the job occasionally result in considerable fatigue, requiring periods of rest. Examples of the kinds of physical demands include crawling under vehicles, climbing on ladders, bending, stretching, twisting while working in tight spaces, standing or kneeling on cement floors, lifting and/or moving heavy objects such as tires, rims, brake drums, etc.
2. Regularly required to lift or move objects 25 to 50 lbs and lifting or moving objects over 50 lbs is required on a regular basis.
