Do you enjoy creative work with machinery that requires a high degree of skill and precision? As a Machinist for the Fleet and Facility Services Branch, you will be responsible for machining and metal work for the City of Edmonton's fleet of vehicles, equipment and infrastructure. This essential role within Fleet & Facility Services involves creating, repairing, or modifying machine and equipment parts. Your contributions are vital for reducing service downtime, maintaining equipment for which off-the-shelf parts are unavailable, and customizing parts to meet client specifications.
What will you do?
- Creates parts for machines, trucks, graders, loaders, dozers and other machinery utilizing various precision machines
- Operates lathe and CNC equipment for Cutting, turning, shaping and finishing shafts, axles, pins, pulleys and gear blanks for forming flat end surfaces, collars, shoulders and cylindrical surfaces; cuts screw threads for dilling, reaming, tapping and burling a variety of work pieces
- Utilizes milling machine to produce flat, curved and irregular surfaces; forms slots, grooves, keyways, dovetails, splines, flues, cams and gears
- Utilize CNC Plasma table to cut parts for Machining and welding process
- Operates drill press to form holes, arbor press to fit or remove bushings or to broach keyways, grinders to sharpen tools; use of band saw and a variety of hand tools
- Assemble or dismantle equipment such as hoists, hydraulic cylinders, Drives, gears; may inspect, repair and modify equipment in the field
- Performs other duties as required
- General shop duties to maintain safety and organization of tools, parts, etc
- Establish required parts and materials for ordering based on planned and emergent tooling or repair requirements
- Enter appropriate information and detailed notes into M5 system
- Participate is all section and/or safety related required training, meetings, inspections, etc
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 or equivalent preferred
- Knowledge of occupational hazards of the trade
- 3 years as Journeyman preferred
- Certified Alberta Journeyman in the trade of Machinist
Skills required for success:
- Adherence to all legislation, and specifically OH&S
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and OH&S safety precautions applicable to the trade
- Considerable knowledge of metal properties, machining methods and shop mathematics; numerical ability to compute dimensions, tapers, cutting angles, tool settings, feed rates and machine speeds
- Spatial perception to visualize from plans, sketches, designs, drawings; detect surface defects on finished products
- Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation (includes lifting 75 pounds) and a City medical examination
- Near visual acuity and depth perception to set up and operate machines and read graduations on precision measuring instruments
- Ability to physically perform the duties and the wearing the mandated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Sufficient strength to perform work requiring the carrying, lifting and positioning or workpieces, or tools weighing up to 50 pounds
- Familiarity with the work of related trades
- Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related task and safety requirements
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated good work ethic and a willingness/ability to learn and mentor on the job and update skills

Conditions of Employment:
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
