As a Shop Technician you will ensure that the Fleet Services shop equipment and tools are in good working condition, verified and inspected so that Technicians can perform maintenance and repair work knowing that their tools are accurate and safe to use. Primary duties include: 

• Maintain a database of inspection and maintenance records, including inspection or re-certification dates, for new and existing equipment as per City of Calgary document retention policies and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements. 

• Inspect, maintain, and repair shop tools and equipment. Identify defects and coordinate the repair of shop tools safety devices and equipment with external vendors. 

• Review manuals for existing and newly purchased tools and equipment to establish a maintenance plan. 

• Plan and coordinate with Fleet Services staff, Facility Management, and contractors to complete inspection, repair and maintenance of building utility and mechanical systems. 

• Work with Fleet Services staff on building related issues and create service work orders for repair and maintenance services. 

• Maintain an inventory of tools, equipment and manuals across all Fleet Services locations. 

• Purchase or tag new tools with ID. 

• Ensure that all OH&S codes and Standards are adhered to when procuring tools and equipment. 

• Review manuals to procure any additional tools, equipment and specialty tools. Standardize tool and equipment purchases. 

• Verify precision measuring tools are in accordance with manufacturer specifications and tolerances, owner's manual, and best practices. Ensure precision measuring tools are calibrated prior to the next due date. 

• Open, complete, and close work orders and maintain calibration history and records. 

Qualifications 

 

  • A Journeyman certificate as an Automotive Service Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician, Industrial Mechanic, or Millwright and at least 3 years of experience maintaining, repairing and replacing shop tools and equipment is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending OR; a valid Graduated Driver's Licence (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Codes and Standards is an asset.
  • Previous experience working with computer systems that support shop operations, repair and maintenance such as Asset Works (M5) will be an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of customer focus and the ability to build positive relationships with staff and vendors.
  • Strong problem solving, planning, organizing, and decision-making skills.
  • This position is physically demanding including lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, bending, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, climbing, use of tools, and repetitive movements.


Working Conditions: Works in an area that is located on the shop floor; regularly drives to satellite shops and vendors.

  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.


Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test . This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: $44.59 - 49.91 per hour
