Railcar Mechanic

Department: Mechanical

Reports To: Supervisor, Mechanical

Location: Kamloops, BC

Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Schedule:

 

  • Mid-April to Mid-October: Three (3) 12-hour night shifts per week.
  • Mid-October to Mid-April: Four (4) 10-hour day shifts per week.

Compensation

 

  • Wage: $45.81/hour

We are currently seeking a Railcar Mechanic to join our Mechanical team- a collaborative group of skilled trades professionals committed to maintaining a safe, reliable, and efficient operation.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Mechanical, the Railcar Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and regulatory compliance of all railcars and equipment in Rocky Mountaineers fleet of assets.

The successful candidate will work closely with other trades, leadership, and contractors to maintain safe, compliant, optimally functioning equipment.

This position is designated Safety Critical under Transport Canada regulations. The incumbent will be required to periodically access active railway areas where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment. As such, pre-employment testing and ongoing medical monitoring will be required.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Repair defective interior and exterior rail car components.
  • Inspect for compliance and service rail car wheels and axle assemblies.
  • Execute regular equipment inspections and complete regulatory documentation.
  • Inspect and repair couplers, yokes, draft gears, air brake system components, handbrakes, etc.
  • Provide technical advice, support, and leadership to team members, management, and contractors regarding railcar components.
  • Read, interpret, and update mechanical drawings and documentation related to car systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational standards.
  • Identify, protect, and report safety hazards; follow all safety rules, regulations, and policies in accordance with class one partner's / Rocky Mountaineer's General Operating Instructions and Transport Canada / FRA regulations.
  • Participate in training and development, including familiarization with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) 105 rules.
  • Perform work both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions, as part of a 24/7 operation.


Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Railcar Mechanic or Carman certificate or equivalent (required).
  • Experience and proficiency in welding. Welding qualification is an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of railcar undercarriage and coupling systems, including mechanical components. Experience with passenger equipment is an asset.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and system documentation.
  • Valid driver's license (asset).
  • Previous experience in an industrial, or facility maintenance environment (asset).
  • Previous Qualification under CROR Operating Rules is an asset.
  • Familiarity with CMMS or other maintenance tracking systems (asset).
