The City of Penticton is looking to fill the full-time temporary role of Automotive Mechanic in our Fleet Department. Reporting to the Fleet Supervisor, the Automotive Mechanic is responsible for performing diagnostics and repairing vehicles and mechanical equipment. The Automotive Mechanic also works with scanner and electronics technology to ensure accurate diagnosis and repair of all gasoline engines and emission systems, along with completing scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance services, identifying potential problems or recommending repairs as required on Repair Order.

The City of Penticton Fleet Services Department supports all corners of the municipality. We service, maintain, and repair vehicles from the RCMP, Penticton Fire Department, all City Vehicles/equipment as well as our own Electrical Utility Department. 

Key Responsibilities:
 

  • Diagnose, repair, replace and adjust major and minor mechanical equipment problems on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, electric motors and associated components, brakes, steering, differentials, pumps and a variety of other specialized equipment.
  • Maintain and repair a variety of two-cycle and four-cycle gasoline engines for chain saws, lawnmowers, tamping machines, portable pumps, etc. as required.
  • Ensure accurate repair details are entered into Fleet Management software to be stored for repair history and regulatory compliance.
  • Inspect new fleet assets for validation of required items and ordered options.
  • Inspect and document condition of vehicles and assets ready for disposition.
  • Complete scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance services, identifying potential problems or recommending repairs as required on Repair Order.
  • Inspect vehicles and complete all documentation to certify vehicle compliance with CVSE standards and PM Facility requirements.
  • Work with medium horsepower gasoline engines with emission systems, requiring scanner technology.
  • Inspect, maintain, diagnose and repair inboard and outboard engines on City Barge and Penticton Fire Department Marine Rescue units.
  • Perform periodic and annual inspections on aerial devices.
  • Perform service "road" calls for vehicles/equipment located at different terminals or requiring repairs off site.
  • In conjunction with Fleet Service Coordinator, source and order parts for repair, maintenance and improvements to vehicles.
  • Adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures and ensure that health and safety regulations are met.
  • Maintain and repair snow control equipment and attachments.
  • May be required to provide and receive assistance and training from other staff.
  • Repair, mount and balance light automotive tires.


Education, Training & Experience:
 

  • Red Seal Automotive certification.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's License - Class 5 with Air Ticket.
  • Valid BC Motor Vehicle Inspector Certification.
  • Boat operator's license.
  • Minimum two (2) years of Red Seal Journeyperson experience.
  • Experience using Fleet Maintenance software (CFA Fleet Maintenance and Shop Floor software preferred).
  • Experience working in a municipal fleet shop environment with other licensed tradespeople.
  • Must possess a complete set of hand tools associated with the trade.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
 

  • Necessary knowledge of the techniques, tools, equipment and safety precautions pertaining to the maintenance of all city automotive vehicles and equipment as indicated by the possession of a Red Seal Automotive ticket.
  • Necessary knowledge of shop safety and WorkSafe Regulations.
  • Knowledge of BC Motor Vehicle Act regulations and National Safety Code requirements.
  • Knowledge of fleet maintenance practices and processes.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tools and software to aid in the repair of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of road maintenance and snow control equipment.
  • Knowledge of electronics technology for diagnosis and repair.
  • The ability to carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by diagrams and sketches.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as work independently.
  • The ability to exercise courtesy and tact in the exchange of routine information with other city employees, employees of private companies and the general public.
  • Adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures and ensure that health and safety regulations are met.
  • Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Office tasks (email, calendar, etc) and Fleet Software.
  • Strong communication skills, decision making capabilities and a desire to continually improve.
  • Must possess strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Must be able to reference electronic and/or written service and parts manuals for correct information.
