Job description

The City of Lethbridge has a term position available for a 3rd or 4th Year Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician. 

Under the direction of the General Manager of Fleet Services, and reporting directly to the Fleet Services Foremen, the Heavy Equipment Technician apprentice position will provide support to the maintenance team while performing troubleshooting, repair, servicing, and maintenance of the City's extensive fleet of vehicles and equipment. This position will work along other skilled trades people to learn and apply knowledge to maintain a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring safety standards for the City Fleet are attained for the efficient operation and safety of our employees and the public. 

WAGE:84% (3rd Year) or 95% (4th Year) of Journeyman Rate ($46.08) 

TERM: 12 months with possibility of extension 

HOURS: 80 hours bi-weekly 

Specific Responsibilities Include: 

 

  • Performing planned, preventative and corrective maintenance on various vehicles, construction and mobile equipment


 

  • Performing various scheduled and unscheduled services as required


 

  • Updating, explaining and exchanging information as required in both written and verbal formats


 

  • Assist licensed technicians in completing various inspections


 

  • Diagnosis and troubleshooting to determine root causes


 

  • Contributing to, and supporting, change initiatives and process improvements


 

  • Actively participating in the Health and Safety program


 

  • Assisting other maintenance staff with related duties as required


 

  • Accurate recording of all vehicle information in both written and computerized forms


The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: 

 

  • Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of the Heavy Equipment Technician Program


 

  • Familiarity working in a mixed fleet shop environment (ie. Heavy Equipment, Off-Road, etc.), with experience in preventive and corrective repairs, including electrical systems, hydraulics, gasoline and diesel engines.


 

  • Possession of a Class 3 license with Air Brake Endorsement (or ability to acquire)


 

  • Dedication to comply with health and safety regulations, and commitment to promote a culture of safety excellence.


 

  • Commitment to quality and demonstrated experience supporting continuous improvement


 

  • Ability to work shift work (12-hour shifts) operating within a seven day continuous operation


 

  • Strong diagnostic skills and ability to work with various diagnostic tools


 

  • Strong Computer skills and use of various software platforms


 

  • Ability to use a computerized work order system and experience using Microsoft Office software would be an asset


 

  • Excellent customer service and relationship building skills.


 

  • Strong desire to learn new processes and procedures


 

  • Demonstrated ability to work to a daily/weekly maintenance plan


 

  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment and provide positive contributions to the team


 

  • Successful communication skills, both verbal and written with the ability to communicate constructively


 

  • Ability to think logically and keep up with changes in technology


 

  • Physical strength and dexterity to perform strenuous manual tasks.


 

  • Possession of an applicable set of tools required.


 

  • Possession of a High School Diploma

  • The successful applicant may be required to undergo a complete physical functional needs assessment as well as a criminal background check conducted by Lethbridge Regional Police Service.
